Gas pipe sizing in plain words
A gas line has to deliver enough gas to every appliance at once, without the pressure dropping so far that burners run poorly. Three things decide the pipe size: how much gas the appliances burn (measured in BTU per hour), how long the pipe is, and the pressure in your system.
Most Ottawa homes run at low pressure after the meter, about 7 inches of water column, or roughly a quarter of a psi. At that pressure, a long run or a hungry appliance needs a bigger pipe than you might expect.

Before we add anything, we total the load on your existing piping. Adding a range to a line already feeding a furnace and water heater can starve all three if the trunk is too small, so sometimes the right fix is upsizing part of the main line.
Black iron, CSST or copper?
Black iron is the traditional choice for exposed basement runs. It is strong, durable and easy to inspect, but every joint is threaded, so it takes more labour through finished spaces.
CSST (corrugated stainless steel tubing) is flexible, yellow-jacketed pipe that snakes through finished walls and ceilings with far fewer joints. That often means less drywall to open. It must be bonded to the electrical ground as the code requires.
Copper tubing is permitted for gas in Canada and is still used for some propane and appliance connections. We choose the material for each run based on the route, the load and what is already in your house.
Permits, TSSA and inspection
In Ontario, gas piping is regulated by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) and must follow the CSA B149.1 installation code. Only a TSSA-registered contractor with certified gas technicians may do the work. Oria is TSSA approved and every technician holds a gas licence.
Pressure test
Every new line is capped and held under test pressure on a gauge before any appliance is connected. If the gauge drops, we find out why.
Leak check
Once the appliance is connected and the gas is on, every joint is checked again.

Building permits
When gas work is part of a larger renovation, addition or new build that needs a City of Ottawa permit, we coordinate with your contractor.
