Natural gas heats most Ottawa homes, and the piping that carries it from the Enbridge meter to your appliances needs to be sized, supported and tested correctly. In Ontario, that work must be done by a registered contractor using certified gas technicians.
Oria Heating and Cooling has done gas line services in Ottawa since 2014. We pipe new appliances, find and fix leaks, extend lines during renovations, and install the appliances themselves, from furnaces to fireplaces.

Do not go back in until Enbridge or emergency services say it is safe.

TSSA, codes and who is responsible for what
The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) regulates fuel-burning appliances and gas work in Ontario. Gas piping and appliance installations follow the CSA B149.1 natural gas and propane installation code.
Enbridge Gas
Owns and maintains the service line and the meter.
The homeowner
Is responsible for the piping and appliances after the meter, which is where Oria works.
Carbon monoxide alarms
Are required near sleeping areas in Ontario homes with fuel-burning appliances. Test them monthly.

Planning a renovation or a new gas appliance?
Call before the drywall goes up. Gas lines are far easier, and cheaper, to run through open framing than through finished ceilings, so a quick visit during the planning stage can save real money on a kitchen, basement or addition.

Who can install a gas line in Ontario?
In Ontario, gas piping and gas appliance work must be done by a TSSA-registered contractor using certified gas technicians, and it must follow the CSA B149.1 installation code. Homeowners should not do their own gas work. Oria Heating and Cooling is TSSA and HRAI approved, and all of our technicians hold gas licences.
What should I do if I smell gas in my house?
Leave the house immediately with everyone inside, without using switches, phones or anything that could spark. Once you are outside and a safe distance away, call Enbridge Gas emergency at 1-866-763-5427 and 911. Do not go back inside until you are told it is safe.
Is Enbridge or the homeowner responsible for gas lines?
Enbridge Gas is responsible for the service line that brings gas to your home and for the meter. The piping and appliances after the meter belong to the homeowner, so leaks, repairs or upgrades on that side are handled by a licensed gas contractor such as Oria Heating and Cooling.
How much does it cost to run a gas line in Ottawa?
A gas line for a BBQ, range or dryer typically costs $350 to $1,000 in Ottawa. Longer runs, finished ceilings, outdoor trenching and larger pipe for high-demand appliances such as tankless water heaters add cost. Oria gives free quotes on any equipment purchase.
Do you work with propane?
Yes. Many rural homes around Ottawa, including parts of Greely, Osgoode, Carp and Kemptville, use propane instead of natural gas. Our licensed gas technicians install and service propane appliances and piping, using the same sizing, pressure-testing and safety checks we use for natural gas.
How often should gas appliances be inspected?
Have each gas appliance, such as a furnace, water heater, fireplace or boiler, serviced once a year by a licensed gas technician. Annual service checks combustion, venting, gas pressure and connections, and it is the best way to catch carbon monoxide risks before they become a problem.
