Natural gas BBQ hookup: no more propane tank swaps
A natural gas BBQ runs straight off your home’s Enbridge supply. No tanks to refill, no running out halfway through the burgers, and fuel that usually costs less than propane.
Ottawa homeowners grill well past Labour Day, and plenty keep going through January. A fixed gas line makes winter grilling easier too, with no cold tank losing pressure on the deck.
Oria Heating and Cooling installs BBQ gas lines across Ottawa, from simple townhome patio hookups to full outdoor kitchens. Every line is installed by a licensed gas technician and pressure-tested before it is used.

Is your BBQ ready for natural gas?
Check the rating plate before you book. BBQs are built for either propane or natural gas, and the two use different orifice sizes and regulators. Connecting a propane grill to a natural gas line will not work safely.

Buying new
Choose a model sold as natural gas, or one the manufacturer offers in both versions.
Converting your current grill
Only possible if the manufacturer sells an approved conversion kit for that exact model. The conversion should be done by a licensed gas technician, and we can handle it during the hookup.
Built-in grills and side burners
Confirm the total BTU rating of every burner, because that sets the pipe size.

How the quick-disconnect outlet works
A proper BBQ gas line ends at an outdoor valve box or wall-mounted outlet with two parts: a manual shut-off valve and a quick-disconnect socket. The BBQ connects with a hose rated for natural gas that snaps into the socket.
The quick-disconnect has a built-in shut-off, so gas does not flow when the hose is unplugged. You can roll the BBQ away to clean the deck, store it for the winter or swap in a new grill without calling anyone.
We place the outlet where the hose reaches comfortably and where the grill meets the manufacturer’s clearances to the house, windows, vents and railings. Placing the outlet is the step where planning matters most.
Beyond the BBQ: patio heaters, fire tables and outdoor kitchens
Once gas is on the deck, many homeowners add more. Plan it now and we can size one line for everything.
Patio heaters
Wall-mounted or freestanding natural gas heaters stretch the patio season into Ottawa's cool spring and fall evenings.
Fire tables and fire pits
Gas fire tables give a real flame with no smoke, sparks or wood to store. Many have a high BTU rating, so size matters.
Outdoor kitchens
Built-in grills, side burners and pizza ovens can share a manifold with separate shut-offs for each appliance.
A second outlet
Adding a spare quick-disconnect for a future heater costs far less during the first install than coming back later.
How BBQ gas line installation works
- 1
Plan the location
We look at where you grill, the meter, the inside piping and clearances, and agree on the outlet position.
- 2
Size the line
We total the BTU load of the BBQ and any future heaters or fire tables, then size the pipe for the run.
- 3
Run and seal
The line runs from the basement piping through the rim joist or wall, sealed and protected where it exits.
- 4
Mount the outlet
We fit the exterior shut-off valve and quick-disconnect at the right height and position.
- 5
Test and hook up
The line is pressure-tested, the BBQ connected and lit, and every joint checked for leaks.
BBQ gas line cost in Ottawa
A BBQ gas line typically costs $350 to $1,000 in Ottawa. The biggest factors are the distance from your gas piping to the outlet, how many walls and finished ceilings the line passes through, and whether it runs along the house or underground.
| Typical job | Where it usually falls |
|---|---|
| Short run through the wall near existing piping | Low end of $350 – $1,000 |
| Longer run across an unfinished basement to the back deck | Middle of the range |
| Run through finished ceilings, or with an extra outlet | High end of the range |
| Buried line to a detached patio, island or gazebo | Quoted on site |
The final price depends on the home, the equipment and the route. Oria gives free estimates on new installs.
When to book your BBQ gas line
Spring is the busiest time for BBQ gas lines in Ottawa, especially the weeks before Victoria Day. If you want to grill on the long weekend, book in March or early April.
Late summer and fall are often easier to schedule, and new BBQs are frequently on sale. Lines that run along the house can be installed most of the year.
Buried lines to an island or a detached patio are best done before the ground freezes, usually by mid-November, or after it thaws in spring. If you are building a new deck, call before the decking goes down so the line can be routed cleanly underneath. For other gas appliances, see gas line installation or the full gas services page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers from licensed Ottawa technicians. Still have a question? Call us any time.
How much does a BBQ gas line cost in Ottawa?
A natural gas BBQ line typically costs $350 to $1,000 in Ottawa. Short runs through the wall near existing piping are at the low end, while longer runs, finished ceilings or extra outlets cost more. Buried lines to islands or detached patios are quoted on site. Oria gives free estimates on new installations.
Can I convert my propane BBQ to natural gas?
Only if the manufacturer makes an approved conversion kit for your exact model. The kit changes the orifices and regulator to suit natural gas pressure. Conversion should be done by a licensed gas technician. If no kit exists, you will need a BBQ built for natural gas.
What is a quick-disconnect for a gas BBQ?
A quick-disconnect is an outdoor gas socket that the BBQ hose snaps into. It has a built-in shut-off, so gas stops flowing as soon as the hose is unplugged. It lets you move, clean or store your BBQ without a technician, and it sits alongside a separate manual shut-off valve.
Do I need a licensed technician to install a BBQ gas line?
Yes. In Ontario, any gas line, including one for a BBQ, must be installed by a certified gas technician working for a TSSA-registered contractor. The line has to be sized, supported and pressure-tested to the CSA B149.1 code. Oria is TSSA approved and every technician holds a gas licence.
Can one gas line run a BBQ and a patio heater?
Yes, if it is sized for both. We add up the BTU rating of the BBQ and every other outdoor appliance, then size the pipe for the total load and length of the run. Planning extra outlets during the first installation is cheaper than adding them later.
Can I use a natural gas BBQ in an Ottawa winter?
Yes. A natural gas BBQ works well in winter because it draws from your home’s gas supply instead of a cold propane tank that loses pressure. Keep the lid and burners clear of snow, give the grill extra time to preheat and keep the hose clear of ice.
How far does a BBQ need to be from the house?
The required clearance depends on the BBQ model and on code rules around windows, doors, vents and combustible walls. Check the manufacturer’s installation manual for its clearances. During the site visit, we position the outlet so the grill can sit in a compliant spot.
