Learn more →Why Gatineau homes are different
Cross the Ottawa River and the heating picture flips. Natural gas dominates in Ottawa, but in Gatineau a large share of homes heat with electricity, and many run on electric baseboards with no ductwork at all. Hydro-Québec’s low residential rates keep electric heat affordable and make heat pumps especially good value.
A heat pump moves heat instead of making it, so in mild and moderate cold it delivers roughly two to three times as much heat per kilowatt-hour as a baseboard. On Hydro-Québec power, that means lower winter bills plus efficient air conditioning for humid Outaouais summers.
Énergir supplies natural gas in parts of the city, and those homes usually have forced-air gas furnaces. A few older homes still burn oil, which Quebec now requires to be replaced with non-fossil heating when the system is changed.

Heat pumps and ductless mini-splits in Gatineau
Baseboard homes: ductless mini-splits
For a bungalow or two-storey on baseboards, a ductless mini-split is the usual upgrade. One wall head on the main floor can carry much of the house; a multi-zone system adds heads for bedrooms or the basement. The baseboards stay as backup for the coldest nights.
Ducted homes: central heat pumps
Homes with ducts, whether on an electric furnace or an Énergir gas furnace, can take a ducted cold-climate heat pump. Paired with an electric furnace, it becomes an all-electric system; paired with gas, it becomes a dual-energy system.
| Gatineau project | Typical installed range |
|---|---|
| Ductless mini-split, single zone | $3,500 – $6,500 |
| Ductless mini-split, multi-zone (2–4 heads) | $7,000 – $16,000 |
| Ducted cold-climate heat pump (existing ducts) | $9,000 – $18,000 |
| Central air conditioner replacement | $4,000 – $8,000 |
| Smart thermostat installed | $250 – $600 |
These are the typical ranges we quote across the Ottawa–Gatineau region before rebates or subsidies. Final pricing depends on the home, the equipment and any ductwork or venting work, and estimates on new installations are free.

Quebec programs and rules that affect your project
LogisVert (Hydro-Québec). Hydro-Québec’s LogisVert program offers financial assistance for heat pumps. Since November 26, 2025, only ENERGY STAR certified heat pumps are eligible, and the assistance is calculated on the unit’s heating capacity at −8 °C, with a higher rate for ENERGY STAR Cold Climate models. We quote eligible equipment and help you confirm current terms before installation.
Dual energy (Hydro-Québec and Énergir). If you’re an Énergir residential customer with a forced-air gas furnace, Hydro-Québec’s dual-energy offer helps pay for adding an electric central heat pump. The heat pump does most of the work, gas covers periods of extreme cold, and the electricity is billed under Rate DT. At the time of writing, Hydro-Québec listed $7,300 in assistance for detached, semi-detached and row houses.
Oil heating. Since December 31, 2023, Quebec has prohibited installing oil-fired furnaces, boilers and water heaters in existing homes, and replacing an oil system with another fossil-fuel system. If your oil furnace fails, the replacement will be electric, typically a heat pump with electric backup.
Licensing. Quebec regulates contractors differently from Ontario, through the Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ) and its own trade qualifications. Oria holds the licences required to work in Gatineau. Program terms change, so see our rebates page and ask us to check what applies before you sign.
Gatineau HVAC by sector
We work across the city, and each sector has its own typical housing.
Aylmer
Older homes near Rue Principale and the river, plus large newer subdivisions, with plenty of mini-split and central heat pump projects.
Hull
Dense older neighbourhoods near downtown, many duplexes and triplexes on baseboards, and the newer Plateau district.
Gatineau sector
The largest sector, east of the Gatineau River: suburban bungalows, split-levels and newer developments, often on baseboards or electric furnaces.
Masson-Angers and Buckingham
Eastern sectors with more rural lots and wells, where heat pumps replace oil and aging electric systems.
Water heaters, furnaces and AC in Gatineau
Most Gatineau homes heat their water with electric tanks, which suit Hydro-Québec’s rates. We replace failed tanks and, in Énergir gas homes, install gas tank or tankless water heaters. Homes with gas furnaces get the same furnace repair and replacement service we provide in Ottawa.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers from licensed Ottawa technicians. Still have a question? Call us any time.
Does Oria work in Gatineau?
Yes. Oria holds the licences required to work in Gatineau, Quebec, and serves Aylmer, Hull, the Gatineau sector, Masson-Angers and Buckingham. Our shop is in Nepean, across the Ottawa River, so Gatineau calls are scheduled like other parts of our service area. We install and service heat pumps, mini-splits, central air, furnaces and water heaters, with service in English.
Is a heat pump worth it if Hydro-Québec electricity is already cheap?
Usually, yes. Baseboards turn one kilowatt-hour of electricity into one kilowatt-hour of heat, while a cold-climate heat pump typically delivers two to three in mild and moderate cold. Even at low rates, that adds up over a Gatineau winter, and you gain efficient air conditioning. Programs such as LogisVert may also offset part of the installed cost.
Can I keep my baseboards if I install a mini-split?
Yes, and most people do. The mini-split carries the heating in the main living areas for most of the winter, while baseboards in bedrooms and bathrooms cover rooms the heads don’t reach and add backup on the coldest nights. Setting the baseboard thermostats a couple of degrees below the mini-split keeps the two from competing.
What happens if my oil furnace in Gatineau stops working?
Under Quebec’s oil-heating rules, an oil furnace in an existing home can’t be replaced with another oil unit or with a gas or propane one, and repairs on units more than 20 years old are restricted. The practical replacement is a heat pump with electric backup, such as an electric furnace. Financial assistance programs may help with the conversion.
Who qualifies for the Hydro-Québec and Énergir dual-energy offer?
Énergir residential customers whose home has forced-air natural gas central heating and who add an electric central heat pump. Homes already heated by electricity or an existing dual-energy system aren’t eligible. If you qualify, the heat pump handles most of the year’s heating and gas covers periods of extreme cold. We can confirm current terms before you commit.
Does Gatineau's climate suit a heat pump?
Yes, with the right model. Gatineau gets the same −25 °C to −30 °C cold snaps as Ottawa, so we recommend cold-climate heat pumps that keep producing heat at those temperatures, with baseboards or an electric furnace as backup. Sizing from a heat-loss calculation rather than square footage keeps the system efficient and comfortable.
