Why have a smart thermostat installed professionally?
A smart thermostat is only as good as its wiring and setup. Most of the problems we’re called about after a do-it-yourself install are not faulty thermostats; they are missing C-wires, wrong terminal choices, or heat pump settings left on factory defaults.
Those mistakes show up as a thermostat that keeps rebooting, a furnace that short-cycles, an air conditioner that won’t start, or a heat pump that leans on expensive backup heat at −5 °C.
Our technicians work on heating and cooling equipment every day. We check the furnace or air handler, the control board and the outdoor unit, not just the wires behind the old thermostat, so the new one runs every stage and mode your system has.

Compatibility: C-wire, two-stage systems and heat pumps
The C-wire (common wire)
A C-wire gives the thermostat continuous 24-volt power from the furnace. Many older Ottawa homes have only two to four thermostat wires and no C-wire, which can make Wi-Fi thermostats drop connection or drain power from the system.
Fixes include connecting an unused spare wire, installing a power adapter kit at the furnace, or running a new thermostat cable. We pick the most reliable option for your home rather than relying on power-stealing.
Two-stage and variable-speed equipment
Two-stage furnaces and air conditioners use extra terminals (W2 and Y2) so they can run on low most of the time and switch to high in deep cold or heat waves. A thermostat that only supports one stage wastes the comfort and efficiency you paid for.
Some high-end systems, including certain Lennox models, use a proprietary communicating thermostat. A generic smart thermostat may not run those systems fully, so we confirm before you buy.
Heat pumps and dual-fuel systems
Heat pumps need a thermostat that controls the reversing valve (O/B terminal) and auxiliary or emergency heat. Dual-fuel homes, with a heat pump plus a gas furnace, also need a switchover temperature set so the furnace takes over in the coldest weather.
That setting matters in Ottawa, where heat pumps run in −20 °C weather. See our heat pump installation page for how we size and set these systems up.
Electric baseboards
Baseboard heaters, common in Gatineau and older condos, run on line voltage (120/240 V) and need line-voltage smart thermostats, not the 24-volt models used with furnaces.
Popular smart thermostat options
We install all major smart thermostat brands. The right one depends on your equipment and how you want to control it.
ecobee
Popular for remote room sensors that balance temperatures between floors, which helps in split-level and two-storey homes.
Google Nest
Known for learning schedules and a simple app. Check the C-wire and system type before buying, especially with heat pumps.
Honeywell Home
A wide range of models, from basic programmable to full Wi-Fi, with broad support for multi-stage and heat pump systems.
Manufacturer thermostats
Brands like Lennox offer their own smart thermostats designed for their communicating equipment, unlocking features generic models can't use.
Line-voltage smart thermostats
For electric baseboard heat, brands such as Mysa and Sinopé make Wi-Fi thermostats that control each room separately.
How much can a smart thermostat save?
A smart thermostat saves money by heating and cooling your home less when nobody needs it, without you having to remember. The savings come from setbacks: a lower temperature overnight and while you’re at work, and a higher one in summer when the house is empty.

Schedules and occupancy sensing
Lower the setpoint automatically when you're asleep or away.
Remote control
Lets you turn the heat down when plans change, or warm the house before you get home from the cottage.
Usage reports
Show how long the system runs, so you can spot a problem early, like a furnace running far longer than last winter.
Filter and maintenance reminders
Help keep efficiency up between furnace tune-ups.
How much you save depends on your habits and how much you were already adjusting the temperature. Households that kept the heat at one setting all day usually see the biggest difference; people who already turned it down manually see less.

What happens during a thermostat installation
- 1
Check the system and wiring
We identify your furnace, AC or heat pump, count the stages, and check the wiring at both the thermostat and the equipment.
- 2
Solve the power question
If there's no C-wire, we use a spare conductor, install an adapter, or run new cable.
- 3
Mount and wire
We remove the old thermostat, patch or cover the old footprint with a trim plate where needed, and wire the new one to the correct terminals.
- 4
Configure the equipment settings
We set stages, fan, heat pump and auxiliary heat options, and dual-fuel switchover temperatures to match your system.
- 5
Test every mode and connect the app
We run heating, cooling and fan, connect the thermostat to your Wi-Fi, and show you how to set a schedule.
Smart thermostat installation cost in Ottawa
Most Ottawa homeowners pay $250 to $600 for a smart thermostat installed. The lower end covers a straightforward swap with a C-wire already in place; the upper end covers premium models with remote sensors or jobs that need new wiring.
| Job | What affects the price |
|---|---|
| Simple replacement | Existing C-wire, single-stage furnace and AC |
| No C-wire | Adapter kit or new thermostat cable |
| Heat pump or dual-fuel | Extra wiring and configuration, outdoor sensor |
| Premium model | Room sensors, larger displays, air-quality features |
The final price depends on your home, the thermostat you choose and the wiring needed. Oria gives free estimates on new installations, and a thermostat can be added to any furnace installation or AC installation at the same visit.

Thermostats installed with new heating and cooling
Many of our thermostat installs happen alongside new equipment. When the J. Lyons household had a new furnace, thermostat and humidifier put in by Mansoor and the team, the whole job took just a few hours, including a walkthrough of how to run the new controls.
A new furnace or heat pump paired with an old thermostat often can’t use its low stage or variable-speed fan. Upgrading at the same time makes sure you get the comfort the new equipment is built for.

How much does smart thermostat installation cost in Ottawa?
Smart thermostat installation in Ottawa typically costs $250 to $600, including the thermostat and labour. A simple swap with an existing C-wire is at the lower end; premium models, heat pump or dual-fuel setups, and homes that need new wiring cost more. The final price depends on your home and equipment, and Oria gives free estimates on new installations.
Do I need a C-wire for a smart thermostat?
Most smart thermostats need a C-wire, or common wire, to get steady 24-volt power from the furnace. Some can run without one by drawing power from other wires, but that can cause rebooting, Wi-Fi drop-outs or furnace short-cycling. If your home doesn’t have a C-wire, a technician can use a spare wire, add an adapter kit or run a new cable.
Will a smart thermostat work with my heat pump?
Most major smart thermostats support heat pumps, but they must be wired and configured correctly. The thermostat needs to control the reversing valve and auxiliary heat, and dual-fuel systems need a switchover temperature for the furnace. Some brands’ communicating heat pumps require their own thermostat. Confirm compatibility with your exact model before you buy.
Can I use a smart thermostat with a two-stage furnace?
Yes, as long as the thermostat supports two-stage heating and is wired to the second-stage terminal. A two-stage furnace runs on low most of the time and switches to high in very cold weather, which is quieter and more even. If only one stage is wired, the furnace may run on high all the time and lose those benefits.
Which smart thermostat is best for an Ottawa home?
There’s no single best choice. ecobee is popular for room sensors in multi-level homes, Google Nest for its learning schedules, and Honeywell Home for broad equipment support. Some Lennox systems work best with Lennox’s own thermostat, and electric baseboards need line-voltage models. Choose based on your equipment first, then the features you’ll actually use.
Do smart thermostats really save money?
They can, mostly by automatically lowering the temperature when you’re asleep or away and raising it in summer when the house is empty. Savings depend on your habits: homes that kept one temperature all day usually save the most, while people who already adjusted the thermostat by hand see less. Usage reports also help you spot equipment problems early.
Is there a rebate for smart thermostats in Ontario?
Eligible Ontario homes have been offered a smart thermostat rebate through the Home Renovation Savings program, delivered by Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy. Eligibility depends on how your home is heated and whether you’ve had a rebate before, and amounts change. See our HVAC rebates page for the current amount and how to claim it.
