Carp is the hub of West Carleton: a village of older brick and frame houses along Donald B. Munro Drive, home of the Carp Fair and the Diefenbunker, ringed by farms, horse properties and the wooded Carp Ridge. Newer estate homes line the roads toward Kinburn, Dunrobin and Constance Bay.
Fuel choice follows the map. Homes near the village core may have natural gas, but much of West Carleton heats with propane, oil, wood or electric baseboards, and nearly everyone outside the village is on a private well.
After the 2018 tornado, parts of Dunrobin were rebuilt with new homes and new mechanical systems, so the area now has some of West Carleton’s newest equipment a few kilometres from some of its oldest.

Furnace, boiler and heat pump service in Carp
Carp-area heating jobs often involve more than one system. A century farmhouse might have a hot-water boiler feeding cast-iron radiators, an addition on a forced-air propane furnace, and a wood stove doing the heavy lifting in January.
We work on the gas and propane side of all of it: furnace repairs, boiler service and replacement, and high-efficiency replacements sized to the real heat loss. For oil-heated homes we quote cold-climate heat pumps with backup heat, which also brings air conditioning to houses that never had it.
| West Carleton project | Typical installed range |
|---|---|
| Boiler replacement (high-efficiency combi or heating boiler) | $7,000 – $15,000 |
| Ducted cold-climate heat pump (existing ducts) | $9,000 – $18,000 |
| Ductless mini-split, single zone | $3,500 – $6,500 |
| Ductless mini-split, multi-zone (2–4 heads) | $7,000 – $16,000 |
| Furnace + AC combo replacement | $8,000 – $15,000 |
Figures are typical Ottawa installed ranges before rebates. What you actually pay depends on the house, the equipment and the venting or ductwork, and we quote new installations for free. Current rebate options are worth checking before any fuel conversion.

Planning for winter outages on rural lines
Rural West Carleton lines can take longer to restore after an ice or wind storm, and a modern furnace or boiler won’t fire without electricity. If you’re adding a standby generator, put the heating system on the circuit list and make sure the generator’s power is clean enough for the furnace control board. The generator wiring itself is an electrician’s job.
Many Carp owners also add a gas or propane fireplace with standing-pilot (millivolt) ignition, which can keep heating a room during an outage. We’ll show you which models work that way and size one for the space.
Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers from licensed Ottawa technicians. Still have a question? Call us any time.
Do you serve Carp, Dunrobin and Kinburn?
Yes. We serve Carp village and the surrounding West Carleton communities, including Huntley, Kinburn, Dunrobin, Constance Bay and Fitzroy Harbour. From our Nepean shop it’s a drive out past Kanata on Highway 417 and up Carp Road. We offer repairs, installations, maintenance and 24/7 emergency service for heating, cooling, water heaters and gas lines.
Can a heat pump replace oil heat in a Carp farmhouse?
In many cases. Cold-climate heat pumps keep producing heat well below −20 °C, but older farmhouses lose heat quickly, so we calculate the heat loss first and size backup heat for the coldest nights. If the house has no ducts, a multi-zone ductless system or a mix of ducted and ductless equipment often works best.
Do you service hot-water boilers in older Carp homes?
Yes, natural gas and propane boilers. We repair and maintain them and replace old cast-iron units with high-efficiency heating or combi boilers, which can also supply domestic hot water. Typical boiler replacements run $7,000 – $15,000 installed, before rebates, depending on the boiler, the venting and the piping changes required.
Do you do commercial HVAC in the Carp area?
Yes, light commercial. We install and service heating and cooling for small offices, workshops, retail units and similar businesses, including gas piping for unit heaters and rooftop equipment. Tell us the building size, the current equipment and how the space is used, and we’ll arrange a site visit and quote.
Will my furnace work during a power outage?
No. Modern gas and propane furnaces and boilers need electricity for the blower, inducer motor, controls and ignition. A properly installed standby generator with a transfer switch, wired by an electrician, can keep them running. A standing-pilot gas or propane fireplace can also provide some heat without power.
What does a ductless mini-split cost for a Carp home on baseboards?
A single-zone system, usually one wall head for the main living area, typically costs $3,500 – $6,500 installed. Covering bedrooms as well with a multi-zone system of two to four heads usually runs $7,000 – $16,000. Both heat and cool, and the existing baseboards can stay as backup for the coldest nights. Estimates are free.
