Gas smell or carbon monoxide alarm? Do this first

These two situations come before any repair. Your safety, then the equipment.

If you smell gas (a rotten egg or sulphur smell)

  1. Leave the house right away with everyone, including pets. Leave the door open behind you.
  2. Do not touch light switches, appliances, the thermostat or the garage door opener, and do not use a phone or lighter inside.
  3. Once you are well away from the house, call Enbridge Gas at 1-866-763-5427 and call 911.
  4. Do not go back inside until emergency responders say it is safe.
  5. Then call us at (613) 866-1869 to find and repair the source.

If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds

  1. Get everyone outside into fresh air immediately.
  2. Call 911 from outside. Headaches, dizziness, nausea or confusion are warning signs of CO exposure, so tell the dispatcher if anyone feels unwell.
  3. Stay out until firefighters have checked the house.
  4. Do not run the furnace, boiler or water heater again until a licensed gas technician has inspected it.

What to know

What counts as an HVAC emergency

If any of these apply, call right away, day or night. A noisy furnace that still heats, or an AC that is struggling on a mild day, can usually wait for a regular appointment.

No heat when it is below freezing

Every hour without heat at −15 °C or colder brings the house closer to frozen pipes, especially with infants, seniors or anyone unwell at home.

Gas smell or CO alarm

Leave first and call Enbridge and 911. Once responders clear the house, we find and fix the cause.

Water leaking from equipment

A leaking water heater, boiler or furnace condensate line can soak a finished basement quickly and damage controls.

Burning or electrical smell

A hot-wire or burning-plastic smell, or a furnace breaker that keeps tripping. Switch the unit off and call.

No cooling in a heat wave

With humidex values of 35 to 40, a failed AC is a health risk for older adults, babies and people with heart or lung conditions.

A furnace that will not stay on in a deep freeze

Repeated lockouts or short cycling on a −25 °C night mean the house is losing ground. Do not keep resetting it.

How it works

No heat? Try these steps while you wait

  1. 1

    Check the thermostat

Make sure it is set to Heat and a few degrees above room temperature. Replace the batteries if the display is blank.

  2. 2

    Check the filter

A clogged filter can overheat the furnace and shut it down. If you have a spare, swap it in.

  3. 3

    Check the switch and breaker

The service switch near the furnace must be on, and the furnace breaker must not be tripped.

  4. 4

    Clear the outside vents

Brush snow and ice away from the white PVC intake and exhaust pipes on the side of the house. Snow-blocked vents are one of the most common no-heat causes after a storm.

  5. 5

    Reset once, not repeatedly

Turn the furnace switch off for 30 seconds, then on. If it locks out again, leave it off; repeated resets can flood the burners with gas.

  6. 6

    Note the code and call

Count the blinking light on the control board and have the brand and model handy. Call (613) 866-1869.

Keep your pipes and family safe until the heat is back

On a −25 °C Ottawa night, a house without heat can lose several degrees within a few hours. Pipes in exterior walls, over garages, in crawlspaces and near the main water entry freeze first.

  • Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls so warm room air reaches the pipes.
  • Let a thin stream of cold water run from the taps furthest from where water enters the house.
  • Close blinds and curtains, shut doors to unused rooms, and keep everyone in one warm room.
  • Use only electric space heaters made for indoor use, away from curtains and bedding.
  • Never heat the house with a gas oven, a BBQ, a camp stove or a propane patio heater. They can produce deadly carbon monoxide indoors.
  • Know where your main water shut-off is. If a pipe bursts, close it immediately.

If a power outage is the cause, the furnace cannot run until Hydro Ottawa restores power, since the blower, inducer and controls all need electricity. Our guide on what to do if your furnace stops working on a cold day has more tips.

How fast we respond to emergency calls

We answer emergency calls 24/7 and send the next available licensed technician. We will not promise a fixed number of minutes, because that depends on the weather, the time of night and how many homes are without heat across the city. We will give you a realistic arrival estimate when you call, and update you if it changes.

Tell us if anyone at home is elderly, very young or unwell, or if water is actively leaking, so we can factor it in. Same-day repair service is often available for calls that come in during the day.

Before the technician leaves the shop, we often talk you through safe checks by phone. Sometimes that gets the heat back on before anyone arrives; when it does not, it tells the technician which parts to bring.

Homeowners have called us at all hours. John Martin’s furnace quit at 12:30 a.m. on a Friday with two young children at home; he wrote that our technician’s “willingness to come out so late” saved the night for his family. Kenneth D. summed up his experience: “They are quick to respond and very knowledgeable.”

We cover Ottawa and the surrounding communities, including Gatineau, where we hold the licences required to work.

Emergency furnace repair in Ottawa: costs and what to have ready

Most emergency furnace repairs are the same repairs we do during the day: ignitors, flame sensors, pressure switches, condensate drains and blower capacitors, typically $150 – $900. Major parts such as a blower motor, control board or inducer motor run $600 – $2,000. Ask about after-hours call rates when you phone, and we will tell you before we dispatch.

To speed things up, have ready:

  • Your address and the best phone number to reach you
  • The brand and model from the furnace, boiler or water heater label
  • The blinking status code, or a photo of it
  • What happened just before it stopped: a storm, a power blip, a new filter, a strange noise

If the equipment cannot be safely repaired, we explain your replacement options with a free estimate, and financing from $49/month on approved credit. Our furnace repair page lists common faults and typical costs in more detail.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers from licensed Ottawa technicians. Still have a question? Call us any time.

(613) 866-186924/7 emergency line

Do you offer 24 hour furnace repair in Ottawa?

Yes. Oria Heating and Cooling offers 24/7 emergency service across Ottawa for furnaces, boilers, air conditioners, water heaters, humidifiers and HRVs. Call (613) 866-1869 at any hour. We send the next available licensed technician and give you a realistic arrival estimate when you call, rather than a promise we cannot keep on a stormy night.

What should I do if I smell gas in my house?

Leave the house immediately with everyone in it and leave the door open. Do not use light switches, appliances or phones inside. Once you are safely away, call Enbridge Gas at 1-866-763-5427 and 911. Stay out until responders say it is safe, then call a licensed gas contractor to repair the leak.

Should I keep resetting my furnace if it will not start?

No. One reset is reasonable: turn the furnace switch off for 30 seconds and back on. If it locks out again, leave it off and call for service. Repeated resets can let unburned gas build up in the combustion chamber, which can cause a hard ignition, and they hide the fault code a technician needs to diagnose the problem.

How long before pipes freeze without heat in Ottawa?

It depends on insulation and outdoor temperature, but on a −25 °C night, pipes in exterior walls, garages and crawlspaces can start freezing within several hours of the heat going off. Open cabinet doors under sinks, run a thin stream of cold water, keep interior doors open around plumbing, and call for emergency service rather than waiting until morning.

Is a leaking water heater an emergency?

Yes, if water is actively leaking. Shut off the cold water supply valve on top of the tank, turn a gas water heater’s control to Pilot or Off, and switch off the breaker for an electric one. Then call us. A tank that has rusted through cannot be repaired and will need to be replaced, ideally the same or next day.

Is a broken air conditioner an emergency?

It can be. During Ottawa heat waves, with humidex values of 35 to 40, a failed AC is a real health risk for seniors, infants and people with heart or lung conditions. In those cases, call our 24/7 line. On a mild day with no one vulnerable at home, a regular next-day appointment is usually fine.

Do you charge more for emergency calls?

After-hours rates can differ from regular daytime service. Ask when you call and we will tell you the call-out cost before we send a technician, so there are no surprises. Repair parts themselves are typically priced the same; most common furnace repairs fall between $150 and $900, and major parts between $600 and $2,000.
