Why Ottawa homes need a furnace humidifier
Cold air holds very little moisture. When −20 °C outdoor air leaks into your house and your furnace warms it to 21 °C, the relative humidity indoors can fall below 15% — drier than most deserts.
That dryness is what causes the static shocks, cracked lips, itchy skin and scratchy throats Ottawa families notice from November to March. It also pulls moisture out of hardwood floors, trim and furniture, which is why gaps open between floorboards in January.
A furnace humidifier mounts on your ductwork and adds water vapour to the air your furnace already moves through every room. One properly sized unit replaces several portable humidifiers, with no tanks to fill and no white dust on the furniture.
Humid air also feels warmer. Many homeowners find they are comfortable a degree or so lower on the thermostat once humidity is in the right range.

What indoor humidity should you aim for in an Ottawa winter?
Aim for 30 to 40% relative humidity on mild winter days and lower it as the temperature drops. The colder your windows get, the less moisture they can tolerate before condensation and frost form on the glass.
| Outdoor temperature | Suggested indoor humidity |
|---|---|
| Above −10 °C | 35 – 40% |
| −10 °C to −20 °C | 30 – 35% |
| −20 °C to −30 °C | 25 – 30% |
| Colder than −30 °C | 20 – 25% |
Treat this as a rule of thumb, not a law. Older windows, aluminium frames and drafty homes need the lower end of each range; newer, well-sealed homes with triple-pane glass can often run a little higher.
The simple test: if you see water or frost on the inside of your windows in the morning, turn the humidistat down by 5%. Persistent condensation leads to mould on sills and window frames, which is a bigger problem than dry air.
Many newer humidifier controls have an outdoor temperature sensor that lowers the setting automatically during a cold snap, so you don’t have to adjust it every week.
Bypass vs fan-powered vs steam humidifiers
There are three main types of whole-home humidifier. The right one depends on the size of your home, how dry it gets, and whether you heat with a gas furnace or a heat pump.
Bypass humidifier
Uses your furnace blower to push warm air through a water-soaked pad and back to the return duct. Simple, quiet and the lowest cost, it suits most average-size Ottawa homes with a gas furnace. Installed cost is typically $500 to $1,000.
Fan-powered humidifier
Has its own small fan, so it doesn't need a bypass duct and delivers more moisture than a bypass unit. A good fit for larger homes, tight mechanical rooms or houses that stay dry with a bypass. Also typically $500 to $1,000 installed.
Steam humidifier
Boils water electrically and injects steam into the ductwork, so output doesn't depend on furnace heat. It gives the most precise control and is the best match for heat pump homes and very large houses. Typically $1,200 to $2,200 installed.
Heat pump homes
Heat pumps deliver cooler supply air than a gas furnace, so evaporative (pad) humidifiers produce less moisture. If you have or plan a ducted heat pump, ask us about steam before you buy.

Bypass and fan-powered units send some water to a drain to flush minerals. They need a nearby floor drain or a condensate pump, plus a cold-water line. Steam units need a dedicated electrical circuit.
How our humidifier installation works
- 1
Check the furnace and ductwork
We look at your furnace, plenums, water supply, drain location and electrical so we can recommend the right type and mounting spot.
- 2
Size the humidifier
We size the unit to your home's square footage and how tight it is. An undersized unit runs all winter and never catches up; an oversized one is wasted money.
- 3
Install and connect
We mount the humidifier, cut in the bypass or supply connection, run the water line with a saddle or proper tee and shut-off, connect the drain, and wire it to the furnace.
- 4
Set the control
We install the humidistat or connect it to your thermostat, set it for the season, and show you how to adjust it when the weather turns cold.
- 5
Walk-through
Before we leave, we show you where the water shut-off and damper are, how to change the pad, and when to switch the unit off for summer.
Humidifier maintenance: pads, dampers and summer shut-off
A whole-home humidifier needs very little care, but skipping it is the most common reason they stop working. Most service calls we see are a clogged pad or a closed water valve, not a broken humidifier.

Replace the pad (water panel) once a year
, usually at the start of the heating season. Homes on well water in rural areas such as Greely, Richmond or Carp may need a mid-winter change because minerals build up faster.
Open the bypass damper in fall and close it in spring.
Leaving it open in summer sends air-conditioned air around the coil and wastes cooling.
Turn the water off in summer
And set the humidistat to off so the unit doesn't run during cooling season.
Check the drain line
For kinks or scale so water flows freely to the floor drain or pump.
Steam units
Need the canister or cylinder cleaned or replaced as the manufacturer recommends; how often depends on your water.
We can change the pad during your fall furnace tune-up, so it is one visit instead of two. Ask about adding it to a furnace maintenance appointment.
Furnace humidifier installation cost in Ottawa
Most Ottawa homeowners pay $500 to $1,000 for a bypass or fan-powered humidifier, installed. A steam humidifier costs $1,200 to $2,200 installed because the unit costs more and usually needs a dedicated electrical circuit.
| Humidifier type | Typical installed cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Bypass | $500 – $1,000 | Average homes with a gas furnace |
| Fan-powered | $500 – $1,000 | Larger homes, limited space for a bypass duct |
| Steam | $1,200 – $2,200 | Heat pump homes, large or very dry homes |
The final price depends on your home, the equipment you choose, and how much ductwork, plumbing and electrical work the install needs. Oria gives free estimates on new installations.
Replacing your furnace? Adding a humidifier at the same time is the most cost-effective way to do it, because the ducts are already open. See our furnace installation page, or read why a humidifier matters in an Ottawa winter.

How much does it cost to add a humidifier to a furnace in Ottawa?
Adding a bypass or fan-powered humidifier to an existing furnace in Ottawa typically costs $500 to $1,000 installed. A steam humidifier usually runs $1,200 to $2,200 because it needs a dedicated electrical circuit. The final price depends on your ductwork, water and drain access, and the model, and Oria gives free estimates on new installations.
What humidity should my house be in winter in Ottawa?
Most Ottawa homes are comfortable at 30 to 40% relative humidity on mild winter days. When it is colder than −20 °C, lower it to about 25 to 30% so moisture doesn’t condense or frost on your windows. If you see water on the inside of the glass in the morning, turn the humidistat down by 5%.
Is a bypass or fan-powered humidifier better?
Both work well in most homes. A bypass humidifier is simple and quiet and uses your furnace blower, but it needs room for a small bypass duct. A fan-powered model has its own fan, puts out more moisture and needs no bypass duct, which makes it better for larger homes or tight mechanical rooms. Both typically cost $500 to $1,000 installed.
Do I need a steam humidifier if I have a heat pump?
Often, yes. A heat pump delivers cooler air to the ducts than a gas furnace, and pad-type humidifiers rely on warm air to evaporate water, so their output drops. A steam humidifier makes its own heat and works the same regardless of supply air temperature. We recommend checking this before you install or switch to a ducted heat pump.
How often should I change my furnace humidifier pad?
Change the humidifier pad, also called a water panel, at least once a year, ideally at the start of the heating season in the fall. Homes on hard well water may need a second change mid-winter because mineral scale clogs the pad faster. A crusty, stiff pad can’t absorb water, so the humidifier runs but adds little moisture.
Can a furnace humidifier cause mould?
A properly set and maintained humidifier should not cause mould. Problems happen when humidity is set too high for the outdoor temperature, causing condensation on windows and cold exterior walls, or when a clogged drain leaves standing water. Keep humidity in the recommended range, lower it in deep cold, change the pad yearly and turn the unit off for summer.
Should I turn off my furnace humidifier in summer?
Yes. At the end of the heating season, turn off the water supply, set the humidistat to off and close the bypass damper if you have a bypass model. An open damper in summer lets cool air bypass your air conditioning coil, and you don’t want to add moisture to an already humid Ottawa summer.
