If you smell gas in your home
- 1
Get out now
Take everyone, including pets, outside. Do not stop to open windows or look for the leak. Leave the door open as you go.
- 2
Avoid sparks
Do not flip light switches, use a phone or doorbell inside, light a flame, or start a car in an attached garage.
- 3
Call from a safe distance
Call Enbridge Gas emergency at 1-866-763-5427 and 911 once you are outside and well away from the house.
- 4
Stay out until cleared
Wait for Enbridge or emergency services to tell you it is safe to go back inside.
- 5
Book the repair
If Enbridge shuts off your gas or tags an appliance, call a licensed gas contractor to repair the house piping before the gas is turned back on.
Gas leak repair in Ottawa: what happens after Enbridge
Enbridge Gas responds to the emergency, makes the area safe and is responsible for the service line and meter. If the leak is on your side of the meter, on the house piping or an appliance, they will shut off the gas or tag the affected appliance so it cannot be used.
From there, the repair is the homeowner’s responsibility. That is where Oria comes in: our licensed gas technicians find the exact source, repair it to the CSA B149.1 code, pressure-test the system and relight your appliances.
Many repairs come down to a single fitting, but we test the whole system so you are not left with a second, slower leak somewhere else.

Signs of a gas line problem
A strong gas smell is an emergency. These other signs are not always urgent, but they mean you should have the piping checked soon.
Faint, recurring gas smell
A whiff near the furnace, water heater or meter that comes and goes is often a slow leak at a fitting.
Hissing or whistling
A sound near a pipe, valve or appliance connector can be gas escaping under pressure.
Dead grass over a buried line
A strip of brown grass or dying plants along an outdoor gas run can point to an underground leak.
Feeling unwell indoors
Headaches, dizziness or nausea that ease when you leave the house need checking for gas and carbon monoxide.
Burner and pilot trouble
Pilots that go out, weak flames or appliances that struggle together can mean a restricted or undersized line.
Unexplained bill increase
A higher Enbridge bill with no change in use or weather is worth a leak test.
How we find a gas leak
Gas leaks are found by testing, not guessing. Our technicians use three methods together.
Pressure test
The system is isolated and a gauge is connected. If pressure drops over the test period, there is a leak somewhere on that section.
Isolating sections
By closing valves and testing branch by branch, we narrow the leak to a specific run instead of opening up the whole house.
Bubble and electronic detection
A leak-detection solution is applied to joints, where a leak forms bubbles, and an electronic gas detector confirms spots that are hard to reach.
After the repair, the same pressure test is repeated to prove the system is tight before any appliance is relit.
Failed fittings and other common causes
Most residential gas leaks we find in Ottawa are not dramatic pipe failures. They are small leaks at connections that have loosened, corroded or were never right. We have shared one such job on our blog: a failed fitting caught during a routine gas test.

Threaded joints
Pipe dope or tape that has dried out, or a joint disturbed during a renovation.
Old appliance connectors
Older flexible brass connectors behind ranges and dryers can crack with age and movement. We replace them with approved modern connectors.
Flare fittings
On copper tubing and older connectors, a flare that is cracked or not tightened properly can seep.
Outdoor corrosion
Piping near the meter and on exterior walls takes a beating from Ottawa's freeze-thaw cycles and road salt.
Accidental damage
Nails, screws or drilling into a line during basement finishing, deck building or digging.
When a line is damaged beyond a simple fitting repair, we replace the section with black iron or CSST and pressure-test it like a new installation.

Gas line repair cost
Gas line repair is priced after testing, because the cost depends on what the test finds. Replacing a single fitting or appliance connector on accessible piping is usually a small job. Work behind finished walls, outdoor runs and multiple leaks cost more.
When a whole branch has to be replaced, it is priced like a new appliance line, which typically runs $350 to $1,000 in Ottawa. We explain what we found and give you a price before we start the repair.
If a gas appliance itself is at fault, such as a furnace gas valve or a water heater control, see furnace repair or our hot water tank page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers from licensed Ottawa technicians. Still have a question? Call us any time.
What should I do if I smell gas in my house?
Leave immediately with everyone in the home and do not use light switches, phones or anything that could spark. From outside, at a safe distance, call Enbridge Gas emergency at 1-866-763-5427 and 911. Stay out until Enbridge or emergency services say it is safe to return.
Who pays for a gas leak repair in Ontario?
Enbridge Gas is responsible for the service line and the meter. If the leak is on the piping or appliances after the meter, the repair is the homeowner’s responsibility and must be done by a licensed gas contractor. Check with your home insurer about any coverage for related damage.
Will Enbridge fix the gas leak in my house?
Enbridge will respond to a gas emergency, make the area safe and repair problems on its own service line or meter. For leaks on your house piping or appliances, Enbridge typically shuts off the gas or tags the appliance, and you then need a licensed contractor to make the repair.
Can I use my appliance after it has been red-tagged?
No. A tag on a gas appliance means it has been found unsafe and must not be used until a licensed gas technician repairs the problem. Using a tagged appliance puts your household at risk. Oria can repair the issue, retest the system and return the appliance to safe service.
How do you test a gas line for leaks?
A licensed technician isolates the piping and connects a pressure gauge. If the pressure falls during the test, there is a leak. Sections are then tested one by one, and joints are checked with bubble solution and an electronic detector to find the exact spot. The system is retested after the repair.
Is a small gas smell near my stove normal?
A brief whiff when a burner first lights can be normal. A smell that lingers, returns when appliances are off, or is noticeable near pipes, the meter or the water heater is not normal. If the smell is strong, leave and call Enbridge and 911 from outside.
Does a carbon monoxide alarm detect natural gas?
No. A carbon monoxide alarm detects CO, a poisonous gas from incomplete combustion that has no smell. It does not detect natural gas leaks. Ontario requires CO alarms near sleeping areas in homes with fuel-burning appliances; for gas leaks, rely on the rotten-egg odour and a separate natural gas detector.
